Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary, How Does Your Lawn Grow?

by Scott Schroeder on July 30, 2007

ScottPot- Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary, How Does Your Lawn Grow? Like curiosity and the tale about the cat, the Las Vegas HEAT has killed my grass. My lawn has been, slowly but surely, dying off in certain areas throughout my yard. And, since I am living in a cookie-cut neighborhood, run by a homeowners association, I have to maintain a lawn full of green grass or some HOA fines will be applied.

So, here I am stuck in a bit of a predicament. Do I turn my lawn into rocks or do I buy some grass patches/fertilizer? And, if I do decide to turn my lawn into rocks, will this reduce the property value of my home in Las Vegas, Nevada? I understand that in most geographical regions, lawns are more preferred than rocks but, in the desert region that we call Las Vegas, this may be totally different.

Real estate agents/realtors? Landscapers? Informed individuals? Las Vegas residents? Anyone? Anyone?

Does the CC&R’s let you change the lawn to rocks? You will use less water and maintenance will be lower. One thing I hate about rocks is you need a heavy duty plastic sheet beneath the rocks otherwise weeds will grow through or kids walking by love to pick up your rocks to keep or to throw. This is from experience.

When looking at homes in Vegas, I recall there were homes landscaped with desert plants like cactus that require little or no water.

What’s the temperature over there now? It sounds that things get heater over there? The weather has chilled down considerably here.

Take a picture of your lawn if you have the time.

Hey, AV, great points, man! I know one thing, if I do get rocks, I will need to get big ones because the wind out here will carry the small ones away! Not sure if I can deter the kinds from taking and throwing my rocks but a big plastic sheet will certainly need to be placed below the rocks to prevent any weeds from growing.

And, I am under the understanding that homeowners receive a rebate back from the state (or the water dept) when they switch to rocks b/c of all of the water that they save in the long run with rocks. Need some more clarity on this though.

Yeah, man, rocks with cactus and other desert plants may be the answer. We shall see!

Hi, Cherry. The temperature has dropped about 15-20 degrees out here since I got back from New Orleans. So, instead of 115-120 F, it is now about 100 F. And, some rain (thunderstorms and lightning) has been and seems to be in the forecast. Hopefully, the rain will help my grass!!! (The lightning storms look pretty cool out here).

Ad, np, Cherry, I will take a flick of my lawn and will display it here, in the comments section for you. (it was dark last night when I made this post ;) ).

I’m thinking sushi for lunch, Cherry, how about you?

Here you go, Cherry, here is a shot of my front lawn, filled with brown spots and, hence, dead grass!!

Wow, your lawn is really gone. My empty patches came back when I placed some lawn seeds and fertilizers. Worth a try instead of redoing the whole lawn with rocks which is a hassle. Just remember to water the heck out of the newly seeded lawn. Let us know what you decide to do.

Yeah, it looks pretty bad, AV. I hear that rye seed is very good (especially during the winter so that the lawn will thicken up for the summer). I think I will try more water, seed and fertilizer for now; I will keep you posted, for sure.

Take care, AV, thanks for the tips (and for the continued support).

Yeah, it looks quite empty, I tried to stumble this page calling for advice. Looks like no one came. :(

Sorry for the late in reply, I am on holiday now. All the blog posts are already written beforehand, I got an entire week of posts ready stock.

You know, from the looks of it, some strategic gardening with desert friendly plants around that tree and on the other side of the walk, might be the answer. I can’t see the whole yard, but it might save you some time and money, watering new grass. If you have other areas that are the problem, maybe you could create some more rock gardens, rather than plant more grass or change your whole yard over.

Hey there, Mrs. Flipphead, thanks for your reply! I am still undecided on this whole situation. Apparently, it costs about $800 to have your lawn turned to rocks (but, also, the water dept is supposed to give you a rebate so it might “pay” for the rocks).
I am waiting on some clarity from the HOA and the water people before I make my move. I have about 15 days left before the HOA people respond back with a fine. In due time, in due time. Regardless, I will post my solution!

Thanks again, Mrs. Flipphead, take care!
